MOBILE, Ala. (AP) Former Alabama receiver Danny Woodson is transferring to South Alabama.

Woodson, who grew up in Mobile, played in six games and had one catch as a redshirt freshman for the Crimson Tide in 2012.

He will have to sit out this coming season because of NCAA rules and will have two years of eligibility left.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Woodson was suspended for a violation of team rules at Alabama during the spring and did not participate in offseason workouts with the team.

Last season was South Alabama's first as a member of FBS, competing in the Sun Belt Conference.

WASHINGTON (AP) The Military Bowl is moving this season from RFK Stadium in Washington to Navy-Marine Corp Stadium in Annapolis, Md.

The Military Bowl will match a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference against one from Conference USA and will be played Dec. 27. ESPN will broadcast the afternoon game.

The bowl has been at RFK since its inception in 2008, and the switch is only for this upcoming season. But Annapolis is likely to become the permanent home, with bowl organizers negotiating contracts with conference partners for 2014 and beyond.

Navy-Marine Corp Stadium was renovated in 2004 and holds 34,000. RFK Stadium seats more than 50,000 for football. The Military Bowl's average attendance has been about 27,000. Last season San Jose State and Bowling Green drew only 17,835.

The game is sponsored by Northrop Grumman.

(AP) As the power conferences work to secure spots in the most desirable bowl games, the Mid-American Conference and Sun Belt also are trying to expand their postseason lineups.

Sun Belt Commissioner Karl Benson says he wants his conference to add one more bowl to the two it has already.

The MAC currently has deals to send three of its team to bowl games, but Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher says he expects that number to grow.

Steinbrecher says the MAC has averaged nearly six bowl eligible teams over the last five seasons, and he doesn't ever want to see a member left out of the postseason when it is eligible.

Benson sees value in being able to fill spots left open when other conferences don't have enough eligible teams.

(AP) The Big Ten released its first football schedule with Rutgers and Maryland included, and the Scarlet Knights are getting quite a welcome to conference in 2014.

Rutgers' first five Big Ten games are: home for Penn State and Michigan, back-to-back road trips at Ohio State and Nebraska, and a home game against Wisconsin.

The Penn State game will be Sept. 13 in Piscataway.

Maryland first Big Ten game is at Indiana on Sept. 27, and then Ohio State visits College Park the next week.

The Terps also play Iowa, Michigan State and Rutgers at home, and Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan on the road.

The rest of Rutgers' first Big Ten schedule includes a home game against Indiana and a road game at Michigan State.

HONOLULU (AP) Hawaii's athletic department is scrapping a plan to drop the word ``Rainbow'' from its men's teams' nicknames.

Hawaii officials announced Tuesday that starting July 1, all the school's men's teams would be known as the Rainbow Warriors, while all the women's teams would be known as the Rainbow Wahine.

That backtracks from a previous plan announced in February for the men's teams to be known as simply the Warriors the current name for the football team.

Athletic director Ben Jay says the change comes in response to public reaction to dropping the term Rainbow from all men's teams.

Jay says the issue is emotional, with the only consensus that the teams should share a nickname.

Hawaii's men's teams currently use three different nicknames.

LOS ANGELES (AP) Southern California is coming off a historically disappointing season that has put Lane Kiffin in a tough situation heading into his fourth season as Trojans coach.

The Trojans will have a new quarterback and are still dealing with a roster limited by NCAA sanctions. They won't enter the season No. 1 like last year. Expectations are far more modest, which both Kiffin and his boss, athletic director Pat Haden, say is a good thing.

The question is whether another poor season lead to a coaching change at USC.

Kiffin says he always feels as if he is coaching for his job.

Haden says he is not about to make any pronouncements about the upcoming season. He says: ``Let's just enjoy the season.''

EUGENE, OR (AP) Now that spring football is all wrapped up, the Oregon Ducks wait to hear what the NCAA will decide about possible recruiting violations.

New coach Mark Helfrich said earlier this week that it's ``business as usual'' as the Ducks head into the summer. His comments come following published reports that Oregon appeared last month before the NCAA infractions committee over possible recruiting violations.

The NCAA has been looking into payments Oregon made to recruiting services, including a $25,000 payment to Willie Lyles and Houston-based Complete Scouting Services in 2011. Lyles had a connection with an Oregon recruit.

Oregon would not comment about whether the meeting had taken place. The NCAA does not comment on ongoing investigations.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) Oklahoma sophomore quarterback Kendal Thompson has been arrested for public intoxication and refusing to obey a police officer's orders.

School spokesman Pete Moris issued a statement Friday saying OU officials are aware of the arrest ``and are handling it internally.'' Moris said coach Bob Stoops was not available for comment.

Oklahoma City television station KOCO says Norman police were investigating a loud party early Friday when they found Thompson lying in the grass outside an apartment. Authorities say Thompson reportedly refused to obey orders and tried to walk away.

Thompson was in a three-way battle for the starting quarterback job at OU. He is the son of former Sooner quarterback Charles Thompson.

Police did not immediately return messages left by The Associated Press.

NEW YORK (AP) Penn State has 67 scholarship players on its football roster and coach Bill O'Brien sees no reason why that will change significantly by the time the season starts Aug. 31.

O'Brien said Wednesday he doesn't expect a second wave of departures from the Nittany Lions, even though NCAA sanctions still allow his players to transfer without sitting out a season.

Ten players transferred out of Penn State after the NCAA handed down severe sanctions last summer in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal. O'Brien was forced to prepare for his first preseason practice with uncertainty over who would show up for training camp.

Players can still leave without penalty until the 2013 season starts, but O'Brien said he has not spent any time this offseason re-recruiting his guys.

``I don't see the mass exodus coming,'' O'Brien said before speaking to a banquet hall full of Penn State supporters in midtown Manhattan. ``We're going to coach who shows up July 31st for training camp. I think we're way past that. I think our kids are committed.''

The Penn State coaches' caravan was making one of its final stops before heading home to State College, Pa., and O'Brien, as usual, was the headliner. ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) Michigan punter Will Hagerup has been reinstated to the team after a suspension for violating team rules.

However, coach Brady Hoke said Tuesday that Hagerup will sit for the entire 2013 season. He will be eligible to play as a fifth-year senior in 2014.

Hoke says he has been pleased with Hagerup's progress so far, adding he must continue to move forward. Matt Wile will likely punt in place of Hagerup this year

Hagerup was suspended Dec. 16 for violating unspecified team rules. He was voted All-Big Ten punter by the media last season as a junior. The Milwaukee native says the past five months have been an incredible, humbling time for him.
