The numbers are staggering, as if there must be a typo. In 27 years as the head football coach at Mount Union, Larry Kehres' record is 331-24-3. Five of his losses have come in the NCAA's Division III national championship game, a game his team also has won 10 times. The Purple Raiders have lost in the last three title games. On Friday night in Salem, Va., the Purple Raiders (14-0) will play in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl again, meeting St. Thomas of Minnesota (14-0). It will be Mount Union's 15th championship game appearance in 17 years, and the Tommies' first. For Mount Union safety Nick Driskill, it's also the last chance. A loss would make Driskill part of the first class to leave Mount Union without a national championship in 20 years. |
